... Shortly before his death, Martí left instructions about how he would like to see his published works organized. There he said that "the richest and most picturesque expressions" in his writings could be used to produce "a sort of 'Spirit,' as they used to call that kind of book." In that sense, this collection is the 'Spirit' of José Martí, the essence of the man in "Doctrines," "Maxims" and "Aphorisms." Doctrines in the Latin, etymological sense of the word, because they teach; "maxims" in the sense of basic norms of conduct; and "aphorisms" in the original Greek sense of the word, as fundamental truths expressed in a condensed form to make them more memorable. Thus, the writings are teachings, rules and principles, like most of Martí's works. As included here, the texts appear in English followed by the Spanish originals and are grouped by topics as follows: On Liberty (1-29), On Social Justice (30-55), On Government and Politics (56-111), On Morals and Human Conduct (112-171), On Art (172-197), and On Miscellaneous Subjects (198-250)... ... Poco antes de morir, en las instrucciones que dejó para ordenar su obra, dijo que con las "salidas más pintorescas y jugosas" de sus escritos era posible componer "una especie de 'Espíritu', como decían antes a esta clase de libros".
